Adkins was born to a young single mother living in various working-class communities of London. When she was a child she loved singing pop songs of the day and was taught to play guitar and the clarinet. She discovered Etta the mid-century rhythm and blues singer, in her teens and began to consider a career as a musician. As she worked on her skills at a school that was funded by the government that specialized in performing arts, an acquaintance began uploading songs Adkins wrote and recorded onto the social networking Web site Myspace. After her graduation Adkins' music attracted the attention of record companies. She signed a deal in the year 2006 with XL Recordings.
